The Girona region is home to many professional teams and over 70 professional riders have made this area their permanent base. Attracted by the climate, proximity to the sea, mountains, airport and quiet roads, it has progressively become an epicenter for cyclists in Europe and has been described as "Europe's best training destination". Here's what the professionals say....
Dan Martin (Garmin-Cervelo),"In my opinion, there's no better place in Europe to train. I moved here mainly because of the team, but the team is based here for a reason. The roads are mainly clear of cars. There's a really good variety of training routes. You're not limited. You can pretty much go in any direction. I always say that guys like Lance Armstrong, who can afford to live anywhere, lived here because they chose to."
Michael Barry (British Team Sky), "Surrounding Girona there are some fantastic climbs and descents. The views are magnificent from the local peaks as the Pyrenees tower to the north and the sea lies to the east."
Bradley Wiggins (UCI Continental), "Girona is a great place, a real mini centrefor cycling. The weather is good, there is all sorts of training terrain and always a mob to train with. Brilliant !"
